Port of Walvis Bay: the main seaport
The Port of Walvis Bay is Namibia’s commercial port, managed by the Namibian Ports Authority (Namport). A special container terminal, which started operating in 2019 on land that was filled in, increased the port’s ability to handle at least 750,000 TEU each year, up from 350,000. Along with Lüderitz, it dealt with 8.42 million tonnes in the year ending in March 2025.
What makes Walvis Bay important for importers is what happens after the ship arrives. Road routes go from the port to Windhoek, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, the Democratic Republic of Congo and southern Angola. That is why many buyers outside Namibia also use this port to send cargo.
